3 Ways to Stay Active During a Winter Pandemic

October 1st, 2020

With the COVID-19 pandemic still spreading and confining people to their homes, people are starting to wonder how they’re going to continue to have a consistent health and fitness routine as the weather gets colder and outdoor activity becomes less viable as an alternative. With this in mind, here are three ways to stay active even while fitness establishments remain closed, and the weather gets colder.

1. Outdoor winter sports

According to CBC, winter sports equipment has already started flying off the shelves - even now, as early as October! Retailers of sports equipment have noted that it hasn’t been unusual to see large purchases of up to $2000 at a time. It seems many people are trying winter sports for the first time this winter in an attempt to find an active outlet for the winter months.

That said, if you’re planning to try this out for the first time this winter, you may have to act fast - equipment is disappearing long before the snow comes.

2. Free workout instruction videos

Due to the pandemic, many indoor gyms and fitness establishments have closed their doors to the public in order to keep their instructors and patrons safe. As a way to supplement that, and keep their fitness community alive, many of these companies have started posting videos of their instructors on YouTube or Instagram, to give you routines to follow along with and make sure you still get your daily activity in.

At Ergonomyx, we’ve started a similar series, called Ergonomyx University. We have several playlists, each focusing on stretching and exercising a different muscle. By following along, you can learn easy new movements and exercises that keep you fit.

3. At-home fitness equipment

Along with skiing and snowboarding equipment, at-home fitness equipment such as dumbbells, treadmills, and ellipticals has been in high demand as well. Canadian Tire reported triple digit growth in demand and sales for fitness equipment. Instead of trying outdoor winter sports, many people are trying to create their own gyms at home. This allows you to create your own routines, and has less travel involved.

If you’re looking for equipment that fits in your home and will help you reach your fitness goals, look no further than our smart Under-the-Desk Bike. Our bike is small enough to be folded and tucked into any corner of your office or home gym, and is a way for you to exercise while being productive at the same time. Paired with our app, which can track how many calories you burn and the distance you’ve pedalled, our bike is an ideal way to keep track of how close you are to your fitness goals, and stay active during the winter months of this ongoing pandemic.

Trying to stay fit while the world continues to change and adapt to an ever-changing situation can be stressful and difficult. But having opportunities to stay healthy and fit is just as important to your mental health as it is to your physical health, so it’s important to plan ahead for how you plan to do so while everything remains closed.
